Enjoying the sunny weather

Farming And Countryside Education

It seems a rare occurrence in the UK but we do have heatwaves or spells of very warm weather and we need to think about how we manage activities in school at these times.

Ideally, working in air-conditioned spaces will keep children cool but firstly how many schools have air conditioning and secondly, how many of us feel we should be outside enjoying the unaccustomed good weather?

We need to take sensible precautions outside. Make sure pupils wear sunscreen and hats.  Stay in the shade as much as possible.  Are there safe ways to create shady areas? Do you have any trees in the school grounds under which children can sit to enjoy the outdoors without being in direct sunlight? Avoid over exertion in the heat – try games or activities that keep your pupils engaged and benefitting from being outdoors without the need to get overheated.  Make sure there is plenty of water available and that children drink frequently.

So, having taken all the sensible precautions, what activities can we get involved in outdoors? Try Games for the Outdoor Classroom http://www.countrysideclassroom.org.uk/resources/1184

Although many of these are describes as “physical” or “energetic” activities, they can be carried out in the shade and should be interspersed with opportunities to sit and get involved in gentler activities which allow time to recuperate and cool down.

Learning with Nature http://www.countrysideclassroom.org.uk/resources/1205 will provide teachers with a multitude of ideas for outdoor lessons at any time of year and some pre-planning will offer activities to carry out on hot days.

Summer Crafts http://www.countrysideclassroom.org.uk/resources/1179 needs some collation of resources in advance but will offer the chance for pupils to exercise their creative skills and might provide items for fund raising at the summer fair!

How about holding a picnic in the school grounds?  Ideas from this e-booklet can be adapted to plan a picnic at short notice – keep an eye on the weather forecast! http://www.countrysideclassroom.org.uk/resources/1079

While the sun continues to shine, make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy it but remember to keep safe!
