Countryside Classroom

For many years, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC)has been active in the education field. Helping children to learn about how food is produced, how red meat can be part of a healthy balanced diet, to encourage skills in cooking, and to discuss the traceability and sustainability of food, is a key part of HCC’s mission.

Most recently, HCC has completely overhauled and expanded its range of resources for children and schools. We worked closely with both primary and secondary school teachers and consulted with the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC) in order to ensure that they met the needs of the reformed Welsh curriculum.

These resources – including activities, recipes, lesson plans and fun activities – are available in both English and Welsh, and are gathered together online at www.redmeathub.wales and www.hwbcigcoch.cymru.

HCC also engages with teachers through events and conferences, and works alongside the WJEC to provide training for food and nutrition teachers.

As the levy body responsible for the beef, lamb and pork sectors in Wales, works closely with schools and other organisations active in promoting education in food and farming.

Activities are undertaken alongside a wide range of public and voluntary organisations, to encourage children to gain a greater knowledge of farming and food, to go directly into schools, and to distribute materials related to cooking, nutrition, farming and the environment.
