We are proud to celebrate the inspiring work of our partner, the Food Teachers Centre, through their fantastic Fish in Schools Hero programme.
The Fish in Schools Hero programme is driven by a simple but powerful ambition: to ensure that every child has the opportunity to prepare, cook and enjoy fish before they leave school. Alongside this, the programme supports food teachers across the UK, building their confidence and skills so they can bring fish cookery into the classroom with ease. These experiences are designed to spark curiosity, practical skills and healthy habits that last a lifetime for thousands of pupils.
Supported by the Fishmongers’ Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust, Fish in Schools Hero (#FishHeroes) is managed by the Food Teachers Centre and an incredible network of volunteers nationwide. The programme also benefits from the passion and expertise of local heroes – fishmongers, fish-loving chefs and fish suppliers – who help bring learning to life.
We’re especially excited to see #FishHeroes now delivering practical teacher training days in Wales. These sessions closely align with GCSE and vocational course requirements, helping teachers develop their students’ knowledge and skills in buying, preparing, cooking, presenting and tasting a wide range of fish. Training days cover essential topics such as fish species, sustainability and health, alongside hands-on cooking activities that build key food skills. Best of all, these training opportunities are completely free for teachers to attend.
