This academic year marks a very special milestone for Sir Robert Geffery’s Primary School, as we celebrate 30 years since the inception of our School and Community Farm. We are incredibly proud to have recently achieved LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Demonstration School Silver status, recognising the hard work of our staff, pupils and wider community to put Food, Farming and Sustainability at the heart of school life with support from LEAF.
Our 3.5 acre Farm is a vibrant outdoor classroom - through our weekly Enrichment and Forest School sessions as well as after school clubs, children gain hands-on experience of animal care, learn where food comes from and how we can look after our environment. Our no-dig growing areas, polytunnel, allotment and orchard, as well as our much-loved animals such as Polly the donkey and Guinea Pig Village residents, all play a part.
Working towards Silver status encouraged us to look closely at what we already do, identify areas for development and strengthen links between the Farm, our curriculum and our community. Learning extends well beyond our gates too, with Year 5 pupils recently exploring regenerative farming and biodiversity at Treveddoe Farm.
Headteacher Mr O’Hara, said
“Helping young people to understand where food comes from and be supportive of local farming and the natural environment is essential for our children’s and society's wellbeing”.
As our cherished school farm celebrates its 30th anniversary, there is an unmistakable buzz across the entire school. The children are filled with excitement as we set our sights on reaching LEAF Gold status this year, reaching out to other schools and organisations and further developing our Farm and its use here at SRG - all continuing our journey as pioneering guardians of the environment!
