Temple Grounds

Temple Grounds is situated on the north bank of the River Swale to the west of Richmond Castle within the Richmond Town Conservation area. It is included on the English Heritage Register of "Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest (Grade II)." It has an area of 14.5 ha, consisting largely of pasture with parkland trees, an unimproved hay meadow and woodland. The site has had an important relationship with the town since medieval times, but now demonstrates the remains of an 18th century ferme ornee (a designed 18th century landscape). The repair and conservation of Temple Grounds is being assisted by the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.
