Welton Le Wold Quarry

Welton Le Wold Quarry

The site is a geological SSSI and is of national importance for its sequence of ice-age deposits. The exposed face is the remains of a gravel pit which closed in the 1970s. Within the gravels were discovered man-made hand axes associated with antlers, tusks and bones of several large animals, characteristic of inter-glacial periods. The area around the face is currently being restored. Meadow, wetland and hedgerow features are now protected under the Higher Level Stewardship scheme .
