Twyford Meads

Twyford meads is of historic interest with the water meadows being farmed from around the 17th Century until the 1930s. The water is taken from the Itchen navigation, just north of Compton lock and channelled across the meadows by a series of carriers running on the ridges, with the water draining back to the river Itchen. Part of the site has been restored with the conservation of brick and timber sluices, to enable flooding to take place. New footbridges and kissing gates have improved access on the site.
