Washers Pit

Washers Pit is an area known historically to be boggy and marshy since the the early mediaeval period. It lies within a sinuous dry chalk valley, or combe, where wooded slopes have been cleared for reversion to downland - land recorded in the 18th century. The steep slopes are topped by woodland sheltered in winter and are suntraps in summer. The valley is a haven for insects, especially butterflies and birds.
