This upland hill farm of 168ha is one of the Newton Rigg Campus University of Cumbria farms. It boasts 4 SSSI which includes two raised mires in unfavourable condition, the Glenderamackin River, - tributary to the Derwent and a species rich bank. The farm has entered into the HLS scheme which will help to bring these units into favourable condition. It supports a change in regime to introduce Aberdeen Angus cattle to graze alongside the Swaledale hill flock currently on the farm. The upland pasture will benefit as the current dominating soft rush is suppressed and conditions will change to encourage a greater diversity of plant species and nesting ground birds in the sward. The farm is also looking to sensitively manage its operations in the vicinity of water courses to ensure that water quality is protected.
